Google's data suggests tablet usage is less than 1% of Android

Posted by newbie Sunday, July 31, 2011 0 comments
Is there a tablet market or is it just an iPad market? The fact is that we don't know, as there are no actual sales numbers available from manufacturers. We have to go by industry rumors as well as reports from market researchers, one of which recently stated that Android tablets may have a 30 percent share at this time and we also heard that Asus EeePad may be shipping more than 400,000 units per month.

However, the actual Android tablets in use may be far below those numbers and the total number of Android tablets in use today could be negligible, if we believe Google's own numbers. Android Market access data suggest that devices with screen sizes of 7 inches or greater had just 0.9 percent share in early July. If we assume that this number is tied to the number of 135 million Android devices activated so far, it could mean that there are only 1.2 million Android tablets in use at this time and shipment versus sales has an especially important meaning to Android.

Of course, that is speculation, but Google's silences on tablet-specific numbers as well as a lack of Android tablet sales data are not encouraging either.

So yesterday we had two possible candidate days from the US and Germany for the launch of Android 3.2 on the UK Eee Pad Transformer, now today Asus UK has given us a firm date for the specific UK launch of the latest Honeycomb upgrade August 2nd.

This date comes via the company's ever helpful Facebook page. We've taken a screencapture of the happy news. Thanks for asking, Tim:

Sooner or later we're going to have to surrender to the massive weight of public opinion and just buy one of these tablet things. It's where all the action is.

Amazon tablet rumors flare on leaked supplier parts list

Posted by newbie 0 comments
While DigiTimes spilled its cup of beans about the devices' possible use of Fringe Field Switching displays and fabrication by Quanta Computer, the Wall Street Journal threw its two cents in with a report pegging a couple of new Kindles for Q3. Now loose-lipped sources are tipping DigiTimes with a leaked supplier parts list that has Wintek, J Touch and CPT providing touch panels with NVIDIA processors at the tabs' cores. The Seattle-based company also purportedly plans to ship four million of these 7- and 10-inch slates by 2011's end.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Android 3.2 update should be out today

Posted by newbie 0 comments
After having been updated to Android 3.1 last month, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is now ready to run what is today Google's latest operating system version for tablets Android 3.2. Asus tweeted yesterday that the update's rollout would begin today, unfortunately without saying anything about what territories will get it first. So it's probably safe to assume that Transformers sold in the US will start getting it today.

On that note, Liliputing has uncovered that Asus Germany expects to start pushing the update on August 5. So for those of you in Europe, a few more days of waiting may just be required.

The update will naturally come over-the-air, your tablet will notify you about it and you can then download and install it.

The biggest thing to come with this version of Android isn't something Transformer owners have any use for. Namely, that's proper support for tablets with resolutions smaller than 1280800 (which has become the standard for 10.1-inch devices).

Aside from that, the update also brings a new type of compatibility zoom for applications designed for smartphones and not optimized for tablets. This should ensure a better experience while running such apps on your Honeycomb tablet. Last, but not least, media sync from the SD card is now possible.

Dell Streak 10 Pro poses next to the Streak 7 and Streak 5

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Dell's third Android tablet, the Streak 10 Pro, has finally appeared in a live photo not alone, but standing next to the older 7-inch and 5-inch Streaks, this allowing us to see just how big the new tablet is.

Interestingly, the photo shows Android Honeycomb running not only on the Streak 10 Pro, but also on the Streak 7, which may mean an official update will come to the latter tablet (launched with Android 2.2 Froyo back in March).

As previously rumored, the Dell Streak 10 Pro should be released in China starting this week, although we're still short on details regarding its price. The big Honeycomb Streak offers a 10.1 inch display with 1280 x 800 pixels, GPS, Wi-Fi, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, and a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

At the moment, Dell doesn't know if it's going to offer the Streak 10 Pro in occidental markets or not. It will wait and see how sales in China go, and only then decide.

Motorola Xoom Android 3.1 update starts tomorrow in India

Posted by newbie 0 comments
The Android 3.1 update for the Motorola Xoom may only start in August in Europe, but apparently it can arrive outside the US earlier than that. According to FoneArena, Motorola has officially announced that the update will start rolling out in India tomorrow, on July 29.

The update will come over-the-air, and your tablet will notify you about its arrival and ask you to install it. The update will finally activate the SD card slot in the Xoom. Multitasking has been improved, and widgets are now resizable too.

There's also keyboard and mouse input support over Bluetooth, support for most joysticks and gamepads via USB or Bluetooth, a File Manager comes preinstalled, and high performance Wi-Fi access can now be maintained by apps even when the screen is turned off.

Motorola's Android Tablet Sales Fizzle Out

Posted by newbie 0 comments
The Motorola Xoom is not faring as well as its iOS counterpart. Photo: Jon Snyder/Wired.com

Motorola announced dismal device sales in its earnings report on Thursday, with tablets faring near the worst among the company's products.

The company shipped 11 million mobile devices over the past three months, according to the quarterly statement. Yet only 440,000 of those were tablet devices. In other words, the Motorola Xoom Android tablet flopped big time.

Out of the remaining 10.56 million devices shipped, 4.4 million of those were smartphones. That number of course pales in comparison to Apple's 20-plus million iPhones sold last quarter, and even to the 5 million Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphones sold in the first three months of the phone's release. Especially considering that's 4.4 million across all of Motorola's device models.

It's a quarter of rough numbers for the company, which of course is facing competition on all sides. For perspective's sake, compare the 440,000 Xoom tablets with Apple's numbers this quarter: The Cupertino giant sold 9.25 million iPads over the last quarter, almost 20 times the number of Motorola's Xooms. And it's important to note that when Motorola says 440,000 units shipped, that signifies the number of devices sold to retail stores, not to customers. It's difficult to determine how many actual sales to customers occurred without further detail.

And even if the iPad weren't doing so well, the Xoom is still competing with the myriad Android tablets available from other hardware manufacturers.

Still, it's not all doom and gloom for the U.S.-based mobile device manufacturer. Smartphone sales are up from 2.7 million during the same time period last year, which is nothing to scoff at.

But with the majority of phone sales being dumbphones or relatively low-end cellular devices the company's strategy of relying heavily on smartphone sales as a strength has yet to pan out.

With any luck, the company will be able to turn things around as more smartphone devices debut in the fall. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha announced that the Droid Bionic a highly anticipated dual-core smartphone which was pushed back to the drawing board for further improvements will debut some time in September.

10-Inch Dell Streak Pro Pictured Next to its Smaller Siblings

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Dell has been working their way up the ruler over the past year or two, releasing the 5-inch Dell Streak followed by a 7-inch version of the tablet. But with the Dell Streak Pro, the manufacturer is finally playing with the big boys. The 10-inch tablet has been pictured sitting pretty next to its smaller counterparts, flexing its Honeycomb muscle in all its glory. The Streak Pro marks Dells first Android 3.0 slate and also sports a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and dual cameras. The 10.1-inch screen has a resolution of 1280800.

The Streak Pro is said to be headed to China this week, though no mention has been made of a release in other markets.

Acer A501 Iconia Tab 4G pre-orders start at Amazon for $499.99

Posted by newbie 0 comments
AT&T announced that it would carry the Acer A501 Iconia Tab 4G back in March. Since then, however, the only other thing that we heard about the AT&T-bound A501 was that it may also get a version with 64 GB of internal storage space.

The A501 Iconia Tab has become available in the UK in the meantime, but there was still no sign of it in the US, until today.

Amazon has started taking pre-orders for the tablet, and it asks a pretty cool $499.99 for it (you also get free shipping). Now considering that this is a full-fledged 10.1-inch Android Honeycomb tablet and that it comes with '4G' support, that's a neat price. Unfortunately, the well known retailer does not currently list a projected shipping date for the Iconia Tab. So if you want to be among the first to have one, you're going to have to pre-order it without knowing when it will arrive at your doorstep. An inconvenience, yes, but for Android tablet fans everywhere it may just be a risk worth taking. You decide.

Bluelounge Nest Universal Multi-function Tablet/Phone Stand and Storage Tray

Posted by newbie 0 comments
The Nest from Bluelounge looks a little like a bowl, but it's much more versatile than that. The plastic bowl has a colored rubber lining that makes it a safe, secure stand for a phone. It can also serve as a storage valet for your keys and other pocket stuff. The rubber lining and sloped shape makes it a nice stand for holding a tablet in a comfortable typing position. The back of the stand has a slider that pulls out to hold a tablet in horizontal or vertical position for viewing or you could just use it as a business card holder. The stand is available in a black base/black rubber lining, or in a white base with white, blue, green, orange, or pink rubber lining. The Bluelounge Nest is $14.95.

7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A100 will finally be released in August for $300

Posted by newbie 0 comments
The story of Acer's first 7-inch Android-powered tablet has certainly been an interesting one. The Acer Iconia Tab A100 was announced back in February alongside the Iconia Tab A500 and the Iconia Smart phone/tablet hybrid, yet it still isn't sold anywhere.

As a matter of fact, in May we heard that the Iconia Tab A100 was delayed until the second half of the year. We naturally assumed that it would probably be launched just before the famous holiday season, but last month Walmart's pricing of the device leaked and it looked like the A100 would be in stores soon after all.

Yet from that point another month has passed and there's still no sign of it. However, according to an email sent out by Acer to its retail partners today, the Iconia Tab A100 will be in stores in early August with a recommended retail price of around $300. That's even cheaper than the aforementioned leaked Walmart pricing ($349), and this price point makes this one of the most interesting tablets to date.

In hindsight, it's pretty clear now that the Acer Iconia Tab A100 was delayed because Android Honeycomb wasn't really ready to be put on tablets with resolutions lower than 1280800 before version 3.2 that came out a couple of weeks ago. Like other manufacturers, Acer was probably just waiting for this particular version of the OS to become available in order to ship the A100 running it.

So if you're in the US of A, you'll be able to purchase a Honeycomb-running 7-inch Android tablet in a few weeks, and for quite cheap.

Dell Streak 10 Pro finally launches in China

Posted by newbie 0 comments
After some pictures of it leaked yesterday, Dell has finally launched its third Android-powered tablet in China. The Dell Streak 10 Pro joins the Streak 5 and Streak 7 in Dell's portfolio and excitingly adds the world Pro to its name for no apparent reason.

The Dell Streak 10 Pro, is, in terms of specs, your average run of the mill Android Honeycomb 10.1-inch tablet. It has a 10.1-inch 1280800 touchscreen with Gorilla Glass, a dual-core 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage space, an SD card slot, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a secondary front-facing 2-megapixel camera, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. It runs Android 3.1 Honeycomb and weighs 727 g. Dell claims up to 12 hours of battery life, but we all know how realistic computer manufacturers' estimates about battery life usually are (except Apple in recent years), so make of that what you wish.

The Dell Streak 10 Pro enables both work and play by using the Dell Divide application, which delivers a clear balance between your personal and professional information. In work mode, you can access the corporate network and apps, and in personal mode you can do all the personal stuff people do on tablets. All without worrying that your employer may have access to your personal photos, for instance, and without compromising access to any sensitive work data. Your personal and professional stuff is kept safe, secure and, most importantly, separate from one another.

An interesting experiment, this. As is the fact that the tablet launches in China first, and Dell isn't yet sure if it will also sell it elsewhere. It plans to wait and see how things go on the Chinese market first, then make up its mind about global availability based on what it's learned in China.

Of course, we've seen the Streak 10 Pro many times before, even earlier this week when we heard that the launch was imminent. The Dell Streak 10 Pro will become available online at Dell, and in Dell-authorized retail channels (which can be found in more than 2,000 cities) in the country in the next couple of weeks.

The Dell Streak 10 Pro costs RMB 3,699, which amounts to approximately $575 or 403 at today's exchange rates. However, Dell has a special offer for those of you who order a Streak 10 Pro today. If you choose to do that, you'll only pay RMB 2,999 for the tablet, so just $466 or 327.

Lenovo ThinkPad tablet will be available on August 23, starting at $479

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Lenovo announced two different Android-powered tablets a few days ago. The company targets the IdeaPad K1 at consumers', and the ThinkPad more at businesses and professionals. We heard that the latter would become available in the US on August 2, however that has changed. A small delay is what's going on here, though nothing to get too upset with.

Lenovo now claims that the ThinkPad tablet will ship on August 23. The starting price is $479, which you can pay to get a 16 GB tablet sans the digitizer pen. If you want the pen, the same 16 GB tablet will cost you $509. If you want to get a ThinkPad model with 32 GB of internal storage space, that will be $589, digitizer pen included. An optional keyboard portfolio case is also going to be sold for $99.

The aforementioned tablet models are all Wi-Fi-only. 3G-enabled versions will be launched at a later date.

After going on sale in the US, the ThinkPad tablet will also make its way across the world before the end of September.

The Lenovo ThinkPad tablet comes with a 10.1-inch 1280800 capacitive touchscreen with Gorilla Glass, a dual-core 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, mini HDMI.

Amazon Android tablets reported to be in production

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Amazon's worst kept secret the Android tablet has been on everybody's lips for awhile now and with summer already underway, we're getting closer to the predicted August to October release date of the tablet. And now, according to the latest reports from DigiTimes, suppliers are seeing their sales move up vigorously in the third quarter of 2011 due to their shipments of IC parts to the supply chain for Amazon's 7- and 10-inch tablet PCs to be launched in the quarter.

The online super store is said to be targeting a shipment of 4 million tablets in 2011, which should be the second largest order from the tablet PC sector. It looks like Amazon has faith in the success of its tablets, which should do pretty well considering that they already have the platforms set up to deliver content for them (eBooks, Android Appstore etc) assuming the tablets don't turn out to be just a rumor. But until we receive official word from Amazon, stay tuned. Will any of you be keen on purchasing Amazon Android tablets?

HTC Sensation vs iPhone 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S II

Posted by newbie Saturday, July 30, 2011 0 comments

VS
Would Android operating system be so popular if not HTC smartphones? Perhaps would not. HTC Desire was one of the first models that were running Android. HTC Desire with great design was in the top of the ratings of the best smartphones, along with the iPhone from Apple. So what HTC smartphones can be better than Desire? There are two answers: HTC Desire HD and HTC Sensation. That last hit today is in our review. HTC claims that this device sets a new benchmark for multimedia smartphones. Is it really so? Is Sensation better than the other two major players: iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S II? Let's find out!

OS

HTC Sensation smartphone is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the addition of custom user interface "Sense", like the Galaxy S II by Samsung, which in its turn received TouchWiz 4.0 interface in addition to the operating system. Apple's iPhone runs on proprietary operating systems from iOS 4.3. It is difficult to determine the leader in this area; in fact, a comparison could look like this: Android vs. iOS. But a comparison of operating systems is not in our current plans, so it is left to decide the right users.

Touchscreen

In this part HTC Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S II are the same again: both models feature 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. But their designers used different technologies to produce them: HTC used the S-LCD and Samsung used Super AMOLED Plus display with high brightness. iPhone display, though has a smaller display, but has a higher pixel density. The resolution of 3.5-inch display is 960 x 640 pixels and technology used to produce it was Retina Display.

Memory

Sensation has received only one gigabyte of internal memory (4 for Vodafone), but equipped with a slot for MicroSD memory cards. iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S II are sold in two versions: with 16 and 32 gigabytes of internal memory, however Galaxy S II supports external storage and Apple's users have to use only built-in memory.

As for RAM iPhone is clearly losing out to its competition. It has a total of 512 MB of RAM, while HTC Sensation has - 768 MB, while Samsung features warping - 1 GB. Samsung Galaxy S II clearly wins the hardware part of the competition, but let's go on.

Camera

5-megapixel iPhone camera looks quite modest compared with the 8-megapixel HTC Sensation and Galaxy S II cameras. HTC and Samsung smartphones can shoot 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) videos while iPhone can only manage 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) videos. All three phones feature geotagging, are equipped with LED flash and front camera for video chating.

CPU

HTC Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S II work on 1.2-gigahertz dual-coreprocessors, and at this point the iPhone with its 1 GHz single chip is not as fast. However, there is a suspicion that Apple did not use all the features of the chip to conserve battery power. At this point, HTC Sensation doesn't disappoint us because it has both impressive design and a fast dual-core processor.

Connectivity

All three smartphones support 3G/HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth A2DP. The only differences between them are versions of Bluetooth: HTC and Samsung feature Bluetooth 3.0, but smartphone from Apple has Bluetooth 2.1. All models have HDMI output; Sensation and Galaxy S II are equipped with MicroUSB ports but iPhone uses 32-pin special connector.

Dimensions and weight

iPhone 4 is the smallest of them, its dimensions are 115 x 59 millimeters. Dimensions of Samsung Galaxy S II are 125 x 66 millimeters, and HTC Sensation: 126 x 65 millimeters. Samsung weighs 119 grams, iPhone 4 weighs 137 grams and HTC Sensation weighs 148 grams. It turned out that the smallest phone will not necessarily be the lightest.

Battery

Unfortunately, for all the benefits of smartphones we have to pay the price of battery life. iPhone 4 can run for 420 minutes of talk time or 300 hours in standby mode on a fully charged battery. Samsung Galaxy S II will provide 540 minutes of talk time and 576 hours in standby mode and HTC Sensation features 400 minutes of talk time and 576 hours in standby mode.

Results

In fact, two Android-smartphone is not too different, but the device from Samsung is lighter, it has a brighter screen, more capacious battery and more RAM and internal memory. As for the iPhone 4 - Again, the choice is difficult to make because of different operating systems here at Apple can play a more established image.

GIGABYTE G1.Assassin, prices start at $ 450

Posted by newbie 0 comments

GIGABYTE has a new gaming motherboard out. The newcomer joins company’s high-end gang of G1 series Sniper and Guerilla and it is called G1.Assassin. You are right in thinking that the Assassin here also adopts inferior X58 architecture featuring compatibility with Intel Core i-series processors of the first generation. The G1 series is ageing along with architecture despite support for Intel’s Extreme Edition processors together with other features essential for a hard-core gaming rig. But it still seems to be a sure shot for manufacturers.

GIGABYTE G1.Assassin, besides favorable processor option named above, also supports triple channel DDR3 memory of capacity up to 24 GB. PCI slots are distributed as follows: 2 × PCI Express x16 @ x16, 2 × PCI Express x16 @ x8, 2 × PCI Express x1 and one PCI slot. This enables G1.Assassin to house a triple NVIDIA SLI or quad ATI Cross-Fire setup.

At the back of it, GIGABYTE G1.Assassin has 4 × USB 3.0 slots plus 4 × USB 2.0 and 5 × 3.5 jack slots ready for a 7.1 audio system.

Altogether this will subtotal you to about $450-$460 which in fairness is quite a lot.

Nintendo 3DS Gets Slashed by $80; Current Owners Get Free Games

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Dont look now, but another gadget is slashing its price. The much-anticipated Nintendo 3DS drops its price by up to $80from $249 to $169beginning August 12.
The move is not just a reaction to slow initial sales of the handheld console, which is attributed by several factors including the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami, but also as a preparation for the launch of Nintendo 3DS A-List titles such as Kid Icarus.
Current owners of the 3DS who felt cheated need not worry, as Nintendo is giving them 10 free NES games along with 10 free Game Boy Advance titles on September 1. That is, if they have logged into the Nintendo eShop before August 12. Great, now they have to retrieve their dusty NES and GBA from their attics.
Engadget also points out that Nintendo has downgraded its expected net profit from 110 billion to a measly 20 billion, which will allow them to sell 16 million 3DS consoles they expect to ship this year.

Motorola Triumph Gets Riddled with Issues

Posted by newbie 0 comments

The Motorola Triumph, which is available through Virgin Mobile, has been rifed with issues from the get-go. Barely just first week after its release, users begin to complain about flickering screens and blurry cameras.
Some users claim that the Triumphs screen starts to flicker after a couple of taps at the lock button, while others say the screen would go completely white at random. One owner even says the screen of his smartphone goes completely black, while the four buttons at the bottom are locked and remain lit. The problem is solved by removing the battery and rebooting the phone.
Complains continue to flood Motorolas way as some Triumph units have blurry cameras right out of the box. Some users have exchanged the faulty smartphones for a new one, only to experience the same problem. Mobile experts say that this problem could be software-related and has to do with the 5-megapixel cameras autofocus.
While other Triumph owners have no problem with the cameras autofocus, the photos end up with a nasty yellow or green tint on them. One user reported that he has tweaked the settings several times, even resetting the phone to factory settings, and the green blob remains in the photos. An example of that green and yellow tint can be seen in this posts photo, which is located right in the center of the all-white box.
Motorola and Virgin Mobile need to fix these problems fast before these complaints become to overflow. After all, Motorola Triumph users shelled out $300 for this phone.

Uh-oh, looks like Google TV is starting to tank, but the real victim here is Logitech, which has slashed its Revue unit from $249 to just $99. Although Google TV has a lot of promise when it launched last October, giant media companies are not buying the idea as it blocked access to their online streaming. Take away that feature and what you have left of Google TV, along with its Logitech Revue, is a mere overpriced DLNA client and Netflix streamer.
The Revues drastic and desperate price cut, which comes after Logitech enthusiastically announced that it has sold just 5 million units during the holiday season, reflects how the company is trying everything to ship its back inventory. Whats even sadder is that Logitech has posted a net loss of $30 million partly because of Revue as it experienced more returns than sales of the device during the first quarter.
Experts say that Google launched Google TV too soon. TechCrunch calls it a half-baked product as it felt like a beta device.
Google TV promised the world and delivered it. The world just wasnt ready, the blog concluded.

Sony DSC-TX55 16.2 Megapixel compact camera to be out in September

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Mega Race sooner or later had to go to the line, where further increase in resolution has no sense (there is an opinion that cameras with small sensors don't need any more resolution increase). Now software features, such as stereoscopic photography, improved digital "zoom" graphics filters for post processing, available in cameras are attracting customers to buy cameras.
This assumption is confirmed by a compact digital camera Cyber-shot DSC-TX55. The gaget with Eximor R CMOS image sensor has the same resolution (16.2 megapixel) as cameras announced six months ago. Like its predecessor new camera can take high-definition video, make stereoscopic and panoramic images. The camera supports 1080i (AVCHD), but the resolution of panoramic images is 42.9 megapixel.

However Sony applied several new features including a technology called «By Pixel Super Resolution». As stated, this technology doubles the zoom "without loss of quality at the highest image sensor resolution." In addition, the new model is the first camera to have "Picture Effect" feature, extends the artistic possibilities of the photographer without the need for a graphics editor. Previously this feature was implemented in NEX-C3 camera.

According to Sony, Cyber-shot TX55 is has extremely low noise, and high speed autofocus (focusing time of only 0.1 s). It also features 3.3 inch OLEDtouchscreen and optical image stabilizer. As a removable media, you can use a Memory Stick or microSD. The thickness of the camera without the lens cap is less 12.2 mm. The new gadget will be for sale in September with cost of about $ 350.22.

Anonymous and Lulzsec Urges Paypal Users to Close Account Soon

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Anonymous and Lulzsec, famous hacking group who had hacked into multiple big organizations including Sony Playstation Network, Apple and FBI now urges Paypal users to have their account closed allegedly after Paypal decision to stop issuing donation payments and funds to Wikileaks (a non-profit website that reveals uncensored leaked government document of misconducts and corruptions that are solely depended on donations).
The hacking group posted a note on PasteBin on 27th July here saying:
Dear PayPal, its customers, and our friends around the globe,
This is an official communiqu from Anonymous and Lulz Security in the name of AntiSec.
In recent weeks, weve found ourselves outraged at the FBIs willingness to arrest and threaten those who are involved in ethical, modern cyber operations. Law enforcement continues to push its ridiculous rules upon us Anonymous suspects may face a fine of up to 500,000 USD with the addition of 15 years jailtime, all for taking part in a historical activist movement. Many of the already-apprehended Anons are being charged with taking part in DDoS attacks against corrupt and greedy organizations, such as PayPal.
What the FBI needs to learn is that there is a vast difference between adding ones voice to a chorus and digital sit-in with Low Orbit Ion Cannon, and controlling a large botnet of infected computers. And yet both of these are punishable with exactly the same fine and sentence.
In addition to this horrific law enforcement incompetence, PayPal continues to withhold funds from WikiLeaks, a beacon of truth in these dark times. By simply standing up for ourselves and uniting the people, PayPal still sees it fit to wash its hands of any blame, and instead encourages and assists law enforcement to hunt down participants in the AntiSec movement.
Quite simply, we, the people, are disgusted with these injustices. We will not sit down and let ourselves be trampled upon by any corporation or government. We are not scared of you, and that is something for you to be scared of. We are not the terrorists here: you are.
We encourage anyone using PayPal to immediately close their accounts and consider an alternative. The first step to being truly free is not putting ones trust into a company that freezes accounts when it feels like, or when it is pressured by the U.S. government. PayPals willingness to fold to legislation should be proof enough that they dont deserve the customers they get. They do not deserve your business, and they do not deserve your respect.
Join us in our latest operation against PayPal tweet pictures of your account closure, tell us on IRC, spread the word. Anonymous has become a powerful channel of information, and unlike the governments of the world, we are here to fight for you. Always.
Signed, your allies,
Lulz Security (unvanned)
Anonymous (unknown)
AntiSec (untouchable)
As reported on 19th July, FBI had issued 35 search warrants and conducted multiple arrest of some 16 suspected Anonymous hackers where 14 were arrested in several States of US including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico and Ohio.
Those arrested may be charged for taking part in the hacking activities under intentional damage to protected computer which may compose a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine, each count of conspiracy carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Indonesians, programmers, and Nasi Padang ?

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Where are Indonesias talented programmers? Why arent international technology companies overrun by Indonesians? These questions bring forward the problems that are  affecting the lack of recognition of Indonesian IT talents internationally. Indonesia does have talented programmers but almost all of them are hiding in the country. They shy away from the spotlight.
The next question is why. Why are they hiding? Why arent they working for American or other international companies? Well, some of them do, but not necessarily in a position that would put them in the spotlight. Most dont hold executive positions. I have a theory that may just be the very reasons why Indonesians arent that well known overseas, so hear me out. This is long so those who dont want to read too much, scroll down to the last three paragraphs to read my theory.

Whenever we hear about Indonesians making it big, its always a local company operating primarily locally. Indonesians have very little reach in places like Silicon Valley but we do have reach.
One of the few Indonesians in such a position is Sehat Sutardja, co-founder, president and and CEO of Marvell Technologies, makers of microprocessors used in every BlackBerry device in the market. He even has a building at University of California in Berkeley named after him But where are the others?
A Googler who shall remain nameless recently said that Google (at that time) doesnt see Indonesia the way it sees India where there is plenty of potential talents to further Googles research efforts. Indonesia is a nation of consumers he said, so its plans for the country only involves selling AdSense and AdWords.
I dont blame the person for having that view. He may or may not represent the view of the company but its very understandable. More recently however, its obvious that this view has changed since Google now wants to establish presence in the country.
Indonesians in general dont seem to jump at the chance to change the world, to explore new possibilities, to leave behind families and friends to discover possibilities overseas. Those who do move overseas tend to end up back in the home country instead of settling.
Look at International patent filings in the past decade and tell me how many are from Indonesia. Its no more than a handful. This partly contributes to the view that Indonesians dont create or innovate. Indonesians consume. Another is the lack of publicized research by Indonesians or Indonesian companies about the market.
As a media outlet, its frustrating to discover that there is a lack of publicized independent research for Indonesias information technology and telecommunications sector. This is changing but not fast enough.
In discovering Indonesian IT talents, its surprising that many arent concerned about innovating. Most simply use or modify existing technologies to create their projects. There are very few contributors to open source technologies from Indonesia. Theres a strong push to use open source technologies but hardly anyone contributes back and submit their codes to the respective projects.
Indonesians in the technology world are just not seen, everyone is too spread out or in hiding. Most companies are too busy to dig through and discover Indonesian talents so they need to come out and show themselves. Those who have been hired internationally probably should try and bring their friends over, get them to migrate.
Novistiar from Jakarta Founder Institute said that, in every university course, Indonesians are actually rather smart but they stay quiet in class while Americans kept talking and putting their hands up.
Of course, plenty of talk doesnt necessarily mean theyre smarter but they end up getting noticed and those who get noticed get the jobs. Nobody knows how good you are until you show them.
The problem with a lot of Indonesians, and this is where my theory comes in, is that not enough Indonesians settle overseas and because of this, very few get noticed. The Chinese and Indians migrate in massive numbers to as many countries as possible. Indonesians return home after their study and yes, Im also guilty of that after 11 years abroad, but in my case, its not entirely by choice, I couldnt get my permit extended.
I think the problem why most Indonesians who go abroad tend to return is that theres a distinct lack of Indonesian food. Indonesians are proud of their food, especially Nasi Padang and other street food and this is why they dont hang around.
Wherever you go in this planet youll almost always find Chinese or Indian food, but Indonesian food is a scarcity. Those who are already abroad say spices and other ingredients are expensive. Well, how about getting more Indonesian cooks and chefs to places like Silicon Valley and open more Indonesian restaurants?
Its probably difficult to replicate the street food experience but the making the food itself shouldnt be too difficult. I say get the Nasi Padang out there, and youll get Indonesians to stay abroad and eventually get noticed.

USB Optical Mouse with Pocket Digital Scale

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Seriously Brando? You guys never seem to amaze me and your latest gizmo is actually an optical mouse that has a built-in pocket digital scale, now how about that? Guess it isnt such a crazy idea now to have a netbook or notebook placed permanently in the kitchen just in case you need to weigh some stuff, right? Either that or drug lords can always make sure their stash is of the right weight while attending to their Facebook account.
The $22 USB Optical Mouse with Pocket Digital Scale is capable of handling a weight range of 0.1 gram to 500 grams. Since it is ergonomic, it works for both right-handers and southpaws without missing a beat although gamers might want to avoid this since it is purely a working mans mouse, and wont have any special buttons to fire off a macro command or anything like that.
The scale will need a couple of AAA batteries to run strange as to why they cant make it rely on USB power alone, so you have less stuff to tote around.

Packlight lights up places where the sun dont shine

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Packlight
The problem with the current crop of torch lights that we have right now is that theyre usually large, bulky and hard to store. Two designers have decided to come up with a new kind of torch called the Packlight. Featuring 45 LEDs, this really bright gadget is thin, strong and flexible. You can bend it around objects or even have it hanging off the side of your bag and it wont be a bother.
Its flexibility also means that users will be able to bend the Packlight to fit it into tiny spaces to light up the dark something you cant do with regular torch lights. It features hidden Neodymium magnets for sticking to metallic objects, double coated shaping wire, 3 lighting modes, and a USB rechargeable battery.
The Packlights designers are now collecting funds (pre-orders) through its Kicstarter page. The Packlight can be yours for $45 and if you throw in an additional $20 youll get a free Solar Charger that can be used to charge the Packlight or any other USB devices you have.

Olympus SP-810UV is a 36x ultra zoom compact camera

Posted by newbie 0 comments
When it comes to compact digital cameras, the lenses featured are usually somewhere in between a super-zoom or an ultra-wide lens. Photographers who do not wish to carry around a chunky DSLR and the accompanying zoom lenses will probably not be satisfied with the somewhat sparse choices of consumer compact digital cameras that claim to offer super-zoom capabilities. If you are one of the more discerning users, then perhaps Olympuss latest offering of their SP-801UZ compact digital camera could be something worth checking out.

Toyotas steering wheel can detect when youre about to have a heart attack

Posted by newbie 0 comments

When it comes to vehicular accidents, we dont really think of heart attacks being the cause, but rather our minds jump to talking on the phone or drunk driving, but apparently having heart attacks while on the road is dangerous (and possibly common?) enough to the point where Toyota is reportedly working on a steering wheel that will be able to tell when you are about to have a heart attack.

Happy 30th Birthday, DOS!

Posted by newbie 0 comments

If you were born before the mid-1980s, you are probably very familiar with DOS, which is celebrating its 30th birthday. If you do not have a clue what I am talking about, DOS is arguably the most popular command-line-based operating system in the history of computing.
The history of DOS is rich, having been a standard in IBM-compatible computers back in the early 1980s. The systems purchase by Microsoft, which gave birth to MS-DOS, started the rise of personal computers.
Although users can now use their Windows-based computers without having to go through MS-DOS, it can still be accessed in the Command Prompt program and still type in commands as if you are learning them during a lesson in computer class. The legacy of DOS can still be seen in todays computers. It is through DOS-based computing that system drives in computers start at C, not A and B, which were used for floppy drives. Also, many of our file extensions can trace its roots to DOS such as .exe and .txt.
If you like to test your DOS skills, download FreeDOS and see if your directory navigation skills remain rustless. You can also experience how geeks of yesteryears entertain themselves by playing Classic DOS Games.

When you hear the name Porsche, what comes to mind instantly is not just a car, but a stylish designed work of art at that. But Porsche has since spread out into designing more than just cars. They are also into designing other things like watches. May be that is why its new Porsche Design P6520 Compass Watch becomes quite a looker in itself.
The new Porsche Design P6520 Compass Watch is not just a precision watch that tells time. It also has a built-in mechanical compass underneath to provide the wearer with directions. But it is not much these features that really matter- it is all about the design. Vonage Offers Extensions Service for More Ways to Make Free Calls Abroad

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Vonage customers, rejoice! The VoIP service has introduced a new Extensions service that links your existing home Internet calling plan to extra phone numbers, such as in your personal cell phone, for free. This would allow you to use Vonages unlimited international calling plans to friends and family members living in more than 60 countries straight from your mobile phone.
There is a catch, though, as you are still required to sign up for an unlimited international calling plan. Other than that, the calls are free. Once registered, simply dial your accounts access number and the international destination number to make a call through Vonage.
Although Vonage Extensions works with any mobile phone, iPhone and Android users can download Vonage apps for one-touch dialing directly from your contact list.

TechCrunch: Google+ Declining Too Soon?

Posted by newbie 0 comments

MG Siegler of TechCrunch has reported that Google+ is experiencing a slump in traffic just barely less than a month since it was launched, saying that the social networking site should find a way to keep its users engaged. This comes after reports that Googles third attempt at the social networking turf (after Buzz and Wave) reached its 10 millionth user in a very short amount of time.
Citing previously released reports, Siegler says that U.S.-based traffic over at Google+ last week decreased by three percent compared to previous week. It is interesting to note that Google+ is still technically in limited beta, but the downward trend in traffic may continue.
Siegler wrote: Google+ started off with a bang a big one. Part of it was the new car smell, but a bigger part was that expectations were so low for what Google would come up with in the social space (their own doing). When Google exceeded those expectations, people were genuinely surprised. And that also spurred usage. There was a sense of excitement: Could this really be the next big social network? But now things are calming down. The new car smell is wearing off. And its time for reality.
As a Google+ user myself, I observed that a lot of my friends who finally got in the site remain inactive. As one friend noted, it feels lonely out there and I agree. While Facebook thrives on what is being shared, the culture over at Google+ evolves around who you are sharing it with.  If nothing is shared your way, too bad.  And most of the time, everything shared over there is either about Google or Google+ itself, such as nifty ways to organize your circles or features and extensions that you would never know unless it is shared to you.
And although several popular personalities have joined Google+ such as Tom Anderson (yes, the Tom of Myspace), Paris Hilton, and even the president of Argentina, there is much ado over how to keep users glued. And Google needs to do it quick before it suffers the fate of Myspace and, gulp, Friendster.

Travelers tend to have a dilemma: Whether to bring along their DSLR cameras, heavy zoom lenses and all, or their lighter, point-and-shoot digital cameras that would sacrifice image quality and versatility.
Olympus comes up with a solution in the form of a powerful 14-megapixel camera packed with a 24-864mm, f/2.9-5.7 optical zoom lens. The result is the Olympus SP-810UZ, a point-and-shoot camera with 36x ultrazoom. It also comes with 720p HD video, 3D image capture, and a 3-inch LCD screen. InterDigital Files Patent Infringement Complaint Against Nokia, Huawei, ZTE

Posted by newbie 0 comments

InterDigital, a company that holds a bunch of patents about wireless technology, has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission againstNokia, Huawei, and ZTE, accusing the cell phone makers of infringing seven of its patents. The complainant claims that the three companies utilized various WCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies for their phones, broadband dongles, and tablets.
News about the complaint has caused InterDigital shares to rise by about three percent. There was also speculation about the prospect of Google buying out InterDigitals patents.
Representative of Huawei said he has not seen the InterDigital complaint, but was confident that his company can defend itself vigorously when it comes to the integrity of its licensing and cross licensing practices. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Nokia said the company was aware of the lawsuit and would take whatever steps needed to protect its rights.
The ITC has 30 days to start an investigation. If the decision goes in favor of InterDigital, the three companies need to fight the good fight or just settle for a huge bounty, like what Samsung did to InterDigital.
With the way things are going, the descendants of Alexander Graham Bell should perhaps sue all mobile companies for infringing the telephone patent. Its THAT crazy.

Laptop Speaker Bar

To some laptop or notebook users, it seems that the units built-in speakers do not always provide the ideal sound quality that they want. For the most part, laptop speakers may not be able to provide the robust sound due to their small size. The Laptop Speaker Bar is a handy bar-shaped speaker that can easily be clipped on top of most laptops and even netbooks. It attaches to your laptop via USB and provides some room filling 360 degree sound, with much better quality than just using your laptops built-in speakers. Electric Car Prototype Does Not Require Expensive Rare Earths to Run

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Ever wonder why electrics cars are more expensive than gas-guzzling vehicles? Part of the reason is the use of rare earth elements needed to power the motor. Only one country holds the monopoly of these rare substances: China, which currently produces an astonishing 97 percent of all rare earths used globally.
Such dependence on rare earth elements need to stop, and this is what a Japanese professor wants to achieve with his invention. Professor Nobukazu Hoshi of Tokyo University of Science has developed an electric car that does not need any kind of rare earth elements. The prototype is a remodel of the 1999 Mazda Roadster and is powered by a 400V/ 9.5kWh hybrid car motor. It also has five modules of lithium battery, each weighing 20 kilograms, and a so-called switched reluctance motor that boosts an output of 50kW.
Although the prototype is impressive on its own, Mr. Hoshi says there is still room for improvement, especially in boosting the cars torque and energy efficiency, as well as reducing the noise and vibration.
It is also interesting to note that Toyota is also working on a rare earths-free engine for its electric cars.
