AMD Radeon HD 6990M - the fastest mobile GPU in the world

Representing GeForce GTX 580m mobile processor some time ago, NVIDIA called it "the fastest" in the world. NVIDIA's new product just did not wear the crown for much time - the title of today's fastest mobile processor is taken by AMD Radeon HD 6990M.

Performance gain over any other announced GPUs for notebooks is as high as 25% according to the compilers of the press release. Moreover, even the most demanding gamers can further improve the performance due to the fact that AMD Radeon HD 6990M supports AMD CrossFireX, which allows the configuration to include more than one graphics GPU. In addition GPU AMD Radeon 6990M can work in tandem with the recently submitted series of hybrid processors AMD A (Dual Graphics technology). Other advantages of AMD Radeon HD 6990M include support for technology AMD Eyefinity which allows for up to six monitors to be plugged in simultaneously.


The product is based on a unified TeraScale 2 architecture and has 1120 stream processors, 56 texture blocks, 128 Z / Stencil ROP blocks, 32 Color ROP blocks and features GDDR5 and PCI Express 2.1 x16 interfaces. AMD Radeon HD 6990M supports DirectX 11 technology with Shader Model 5.0 and DirectCompute 11, OpenGL 4.1, OpenCL 1.1, AMD App Acceleration and AMD HD3D. Universal VideoDecoder 3 UVD provides hardware decoding of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, VC-1, MPEG-2 (SD & HD), Multi-View Codec (MVC) 9, MPEG-4 part 2 (DivX, Xvid), and Adobe Flash10.

The list includes Dual-link DVI output (resolution up to 2560x1600), DisplayPort 1.2 (2560x1600), HDMI 1.4a (1920x1200) and VGA (2048x1536). Integrated audio controller provides multichannel (7.1) audio via HDMI (AC-3 formats, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio). AMD PowerPlay technology can dynamically manage power GPU providing high energy efficiency.

GPU core clock speed is 715 MHz. The productivity is equal to 1,6 TeraFLOPS (single precision). Memory clock is 900 MHz (3600 MHz).
