HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One: An All-in-One That’s Not for Everyone

The HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One is a whiz at multitasking, scanning, e-malling, copying, and faxing with case. But when it comes to the basic tasks-printing documents and photos- that’s where the device reveals its weaknesses.

At 14.8 pounds, the J5780 is light enough to move .around easily, and small enough, at 9.3 by 18 by 15.2 inches (HWD), to keep on your desk. Setup for the J5780 is pretty standard, but the unit’s mostly automatic alignment is unusual enough to mention: When you load print cartridges, the front-panel LCD prompts you to print an alignment page and scan it. The AIO then makes any needed adjustments.

In our tests, the J5780 performed reasonably well, scoring 21:10 on our business applications suite (on a par with similarly priced models), but slowing down significantly on photo jobs, averaging 3:11 for 4-by-6 prints and 8:17 for 8-by-10s. Graphic and photo quality was also adequate, though photos smudged easily, even when dry. Text quality was dicey. Fewer than half the fonts in our test were well formed at 8 points. The text is sharp enough for the needs of most schools or small businesses, but not if you’re going for a professional look.

The J5780’s total package is 3 good fit as a lightduty home AIO or as a personal printer in a small office, if you aren’t too demanding about text quality.
