The Side kick LX’s best features is its keyboard. The well-spaced, raised buttons make typing easier on the LX than on almost any other handheld device I’ve tested. The keyboard also ties into the excellent IM client, backed up with both SMS and MMS support. You have full access to AIM, MSN, and Yahoo! Mail buddy list, and you can flip through conversations quickly.

There are some drawbacks. The LX pushes POP3/ IMAP e-mail to you, though it doesn’t support Gmail very well-or Yahoo! Mail or Exchange at all. It browses the Web, but not very quickly. The LX is stuck with T-Mobile’s poky EDGE network without the boost of Wi-Fi that other EDGE devices have. Worse, the browser is basic, without support for frames or Flash. As a phone, the LX is mediocre. Maximum call volume isn’t very loud, though the speakerphone sounds fine. Bluetooth headsets are supported, but only in mono mode, not stereo.

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry Curve is superior to the Sidekick LX in almost every way-and it’s less expensive. But if you find the Curve too cramped, the roomier Sidekick LX may be for you.

After the simple setup, the A626 can print from a computer, a PictBridge camera, a memory card, or a USB key. The latter two can be used with touch-screen-based menus, which enable photo-editing tasks such as cropping, red-eye removal, or adding a frame.

Photo output was true photo quality, though some colors looked a bit punchy. Print speed, at upward of a minute, was less than impressive. Cost per print is just above average, at 29.2 cents for a 4-by-6.

Still, the A626’s touch-screen convenience and overall quality design are enough to make it a winner.

The NAS200 has room for two drives, configurable separately or together, the last in shared or mirrored mode. You’ll also find all the usual NAS features, including backup (via third-party software), access accounts, a UPnP-compatible media server and even an FIT server that you can use to get to your shared files across the Web. Unfortunately, accessing the more advanced features isn’t particularly intuitive.

Performance was noticeably slow, averaging 4.7 MBps on our tests. This isn’t poor enough to be a deal breaker for standard data operations, but if you plan to view video from the NAS200, the slow throughput means you’ll probably experience some frame loss.

Performance troubles aside, however, the NAS200 has all the features you’d expect in a home NAS device, and at a good price. So unless you’re looking to use it primarily as a video server, this is a workable storage solution.

The Qosmio’s high-definition experience is arguably the best in the media center laptop category. Toshiba’s software HD DVD player produces crisp, smooth, artifact-free image. The system’s HD DVD-R drive lets you burn and play back HD DVD content. And its four integrated Harman Kardon speakers. 1-bit amplifier, subwoofer, and Dolby 5.1 surround sound make the audio offerings the most powerful available in a laptop.

Toshiba skipped the integrated TV tuner, instead opting to include an external USD tuner and capturing device so that you can record TV content to the dual 160GB drives. Otherwise, the system is loaded with features, including five USB ports, a fingerprint reader, a FireWire port, and both an ExpressCard/34 and a PC Card slot.

The HD burning process lags behind its Blu-ray competition, occurring at a slow IX speed. And if you let Toshiba’s Disc Creator software verify the finished product, the process will take twice as long, since the program analyzes each file.

The Intel dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM and discrete graphics card are set in stone on Toshiba’s Web site, but they are enough to handle most multimedia tasks and some 3D-intensive games (though not at a high resolution).

The Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV680 is not an economical way to score true 1080p content on your laptop. But if awesome surround sound and HD DVD burning capabilities are what you seek, this laptop delivers those goods and more.

The 5,400-rpm Mini is fast, taking 51seconds to back up my test folder using the One Touch utility and 49 seconds with Windows drag-and-drop. (Anything under a minute is quick.)

The list price of the OneTouch 4 Mini is lower on a GB- per-dollar basis that that of competing products from Toshiba and Western Digital. By adding in disaster recovery features and an ample five-year warranty, Maxtor has made the Mini an ideal travel companion.

The w2408 has an HDCP-enabled DVI port, an analog input, five USB ports, and an audio jack for the rear-mounted speakers. But I’m puzzled by the lack of extra A/V inputs such as S-Video and component video. HP bills this as a model for entertainment as well as home office use, so those ports would make sense.

On my tests, primary and secondary colors appeared uniform and ramped evenly from dark to light, and there be no color tracking errors or signs of tinting. The panel’s 5-ms pixel response (black to white) delivered a bright, smooth widescreen video and gaming experience. The action was fast and furious (and smooth) when I played a round of F.E.A.R., while my favorite DVD movie, The Departed, looked spectacular, with no evidence of motion artifacts or ghosting. The w2408 doesn’t do quite as well at showing grays, with some blurring at the brightest and darkest shades.

Despite its shortcomings, the w2408 is a good choice if you’re looking for a big, bright display for work or play.

Slid closed, the i760 looks like a thick candy bar-style phone. Opening the device rotates the screen and exposes the QWERTY keyboard. The 400-MHz processor lets Windows Mobile shine. Long e-mails open relatively quickly, and the included Picsel browser renders the most complex PDF files with aplomb. The only hitch was the 54MB of program memory, which, since Windows Mobile never quits programs, periodically ran out. AWOL are IM and GPS applications and support for 4GB memory cards; their absence is disappointing, but not a deal breaker.

The i760 connects to the Internet using both Verizon’s fast EV-DO Rev 0 network and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g. Calls made with Verizon coverage were loud and clear, with full-sounding voice tones, better-than-average noise cancellation, and a very powerful, clear speakerphone. The i760 can make calls and play music over both 2.5mm and wired Bluetooth headsets.

All of these features come together for a pleasant Windows Mobile experience, making the i760 the best Verizon mobile productivity tool I’ve seen.

Although most PC displays have a video processor built in, before the XHD3000, none were able to scale content properly to 2,560-by-1,600 for 30 inch displays. Instead, this function was handled by the PC’s graphics card. The XHD3000 incorporates the Silicon Optix Realta chipset, a high-end video processor, making it capable of scaling, deinterlacing, and reducing noise on both standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) video streams.

The XHD3000 has inputs galore. You can connect up to six devices if you use S-Video and composite connections. You can also hook up a PC, a game console, and an HD disc player and switch easily between them with the included remote control.
One of the XHD3000’s best features is the way it handles picture-in-picture (PiP): You can scale PiP to a variety of resolutions and make it partially transparent. PiP enables you to have a video playing on your desktop yet still have access to all your PC’s desktop functions.

The XHD3000 did an excellent job of displaying games at varying resolutions without graininess. Motion performance was very good, though with a bit of smearing under very high-speed action.

One shortcoming is that the XHD3000’s panel doesn’t show as wide a range of colors as its competition. Gateway used a 72 percent color-gamut panel as opposed to the 92 percent panels that Dell and HP are using. That’s fine for consumer-level photo and video editing, but not for professional graphics work. Another flaw is that its backlighting isn’t uniform, and some backlight bleeding was visible in a darkened room.

Gateway’s 30-inch widescreen flat-panel LCD is pricey, going for a couple hundred dollars more than its competition. But if you want to hook multiple devices up to a big, high-resolution display that you plan to use more for HD video and gaming than for editing still images, this 30-inch display can’t be beat.

Lenovo stuck with the same tried-and-true design elements for the X61. The magnesium-alloy-backed frame, which protects the system against wear and tear, and its pitch-black ID are identical to those of the rest of the ThinkPad line. Unlike many of its competitors, the tablet comes with a standard-size screen and only one option for resolution, 1.024-by-768. The matte screen finish is more advantageous for office work (as opposed to multimedia), but the screen allows for less vertical scrolling in tablet mode.

With its unmatched full-size keyboard and unique TrackPoint pointing- stick technology, the X61 provides the best typing experience I’ve found on a tablet-hands down. Tablet mode is where the system comes more in line with its competition. Writing recognition is superb and can be further improved by Vista’s Tablet PC Pen Training application. And the included digitizer pen has a rubber grip in the middle, increasing the comfort level.

The X61’s 66-Wh extended battery boosts the unit’s weight to 4,4 pounds. The system is stocked with features, including three USB ports and one FireWire port. The only thing missing is a built-in optical drive, omitted in order to keep the X61 as light as possible. (Those who can’t live without one can opt to purchase an additional 2-pound docking station with a built-in optical drive.) In the end, every convertible tablet is a compromise: Either you want the lightest system possible, or you opt for a heavier system with the ability to watch DVDs and install software.

The X61 also adds mobile broadband. You can choose between Cingular’s HSDPA and Verizon’s EV-DO services, indicated by the antenna bump on top of the screen.

Another concession to keeping the weight down is a low-voltage dual-core Intel processor. Even with 2GB of RAM on board, ULV processors have a tough time keeping up with Windows Vista, which will take up more precious space over time, ultimately slowing down your system. Still, the L7500 processor is a good choice if you want a good balance between performance and battery life. The processor’s low power consumption allowed the X61 to rack up 5 hours 17 minutes on the MobileMark 2007 test. That’s 32 minutes better than the performance of the HP Compaq 2710p, its closest competitor in this area.

Despite a slew of impressive convertible tablet entries, the X61 is standing up to the competition and making the changeover easy for many would-be tablet converts. Lenovo’s time-honored design is still winning formula.
