Sandisk Sansa TakeTV: Video, from PC to TV, Easily

Posted by newbie Friday, November 30, 2007 0 comments

SanDisk is offering what might be the easiest way to watch videos from your PC on your TV. The Sansa Take TV - a USB drive- plugs into a dock that in turn connects to your television. Put the video on the device by dragging and dropping your own files, or download content from Fanfare.com, SanDisk’s source for video. I loaded the TakeTV with files and started watching videos on my TV in minutes. You can forget about HD, surround sound, or a ton of storage space: The TakeTV lacks a hard drive and has minimal A/V outputs. But at $l00 for 4GB of storage or $150 for 8GB, the device comes at a nice price-and it just works well.

Compatible with both Windows Vista and XP, the TakeTV supports DivX/Xvid and MPEG-4 video files, but it won’t display photos or Play music files. SanDisk claims that this capability is in the works.

Currently, Fanfare.com offers shows like Dexter and CSI: Miami free. Eventually, premium offerings from Showtime will cost $1.99 or more, or users can choose free content with advertisements. The quality of the available clips on Fanfare is watchable but not stellar The TakeTV’s playback resolution is 720 by 576.

The TakeTV is a hassle-free way to move content from your PC to your TV. It may not have all the bells and whistles of a conventional media extender, but it gets the job done well and inexpensively

T-Mobile Sidekick LX Review: Easy on the Eyes-And Fingers

Posted by newbie 0 comments
T-Mobile Sidekick LX
The limousine of messaging devices, T-Mobile’s huge new Sidekick comes with a luxurious keyboard and a big, bright screen that makes e-mails and IMs fun to write and easy to read.

The Side kick LX’s best features is its keyboard. The well-spaced, raised buttons make typing easier on the LX than on almost any other handheld device I’ve tested. The keyboard also ties into the excellent IM client, backed up with both SMS and MMS support. You have full access to AIM, MSN, and Yahoo! Mail buddy list, and you can flip through conversations quickly.

There are some drawbacks. The LX pushes POP3/ IMAP e-mail to you, though it doesn’t support Gmail very well-or Yahoo! Mail or Exchange at all. It browses the Web, but not very quickly. The LX is stuck with T-Mobile’s poky EDGE network without the boost of Wi-Fi that other EDGE devices have. Worse, the browser is basic, without support for frames or Flash. As a phone, the LX is mediocre. Maximum call volume isn’t very loud, though the speakerphone sounds fine. Bluetooth headsets are supported, but only in mono mode, not stereo.

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry Curve is superior to the Sidekick LX in almost every way-and it’s less expensive. But if you find the Curve too cramped, the roomier Sidekick LX may be for you.

HP Photosmart A626 Compact Photo Printer: Photo Printing With Style

Posted by newbie 0 comments

If hauling yourself to the local drugstore to print photos is too long a trek, here’s a stay-at-home solution. HP’s Photosmart A626 Compact Photo Printer offers a 4.8-inch touch screen that turns the unit into a kind of mini photo kiosk.

The A626 weighs only 3.2 pounds, plus an extra 8 ounces for the included battery. HP says the printer can churn out 75 4-by-6 photos on a full charge. The A626 can also produce standard-format photos at up to 5 by 7 inches and panoramas up to 4 by 12 inches.

After the simple setup, the A626 can print from a computer, a PictBridge camera, a memory card, or a USB key. The latter two can be used with touch-screen-based menus, which enable photo-editing tasks such as cropping, red-eye removal, or adding a frame.

Photo output was true photo quality, though some colors looked a bit punchy. Print speed, at upward of a minute, was less than impressive. Cost per print is just above average, at 29.2 cents for a 4-by-6.

Still, the A626’s touch-screen convenience and overall quality design are enough to make it a winner.

Linksys NAS200: Home NAS on a Budget

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Linksys enters the home network-attached storage (NAS) device market with the budget-conscious and bluntly named NAS200. You purchase the box as just that-an empty box-for about $135 (street). Adding storage can bring up the cost to anywhere from $200 to $600, depending on what capacity eSATA drives you purchase.

The NAS200 has room for two drives, configurable separately or together, the last in shared or mirrored mode. You’ll also find all the usual NAS features, including backup (via third-party software), access accounts, a UPnP-compatible media server and even an FIT server that you can use to get to your shared files across the Web. Unfortunately, accessing the more advanced features isn’t particularly intuitive.

Performance was noticeably slow, averaging 4.7 MBps on our tests. This isn’t poor enough to be a deal breaker for standard data operations, but if you plan to view video from the NAS200, the slow throughput means you’ll probably experience some frame loss.

Performance troubles aside, however, the NAS200 has all the features you’d expect in a home NAS device, and at a good price. So unless you’re looking to use it primarily as a video server, this is a workable storage solution.

Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV680 Review: Heavyweight Laptop Contender

Posted by newbie 0 comments
Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV680
Although you may want to move this laptop around, you probably wouldn’t take it with you on a cross-country trek. Toshiba’s newest Qosmio, the G45-AV680, is a great hulking laptop, weighing in at a hefty 9.9 pounds, with a glorious 17-inch 1080p widescreen. The system was given a much-needed design overhaul; in particular, it’s the first laptop with an HD DVD-R writable drive. Unfortunately, its high price tag is likely to scare off most would-be buyers.

The Qosmio’s high-definition experience is arguably the best in the media center laptop category. Toshiba’s software HD DVD player produces crisp, smooth, artifact-free image. The system’s HD DVD-R drive lets you burn and play back HD DVD content. And its four integrated Harman Kardon speakers. 1-bit amplifier, subwoofer, and Dolby 5.1 surround sound make the audio offerings the most powerful available in a laptop.

Toshiba skipped the integrated TV tuner, instead opting to include an external USD tuner and capturing device so that you can record TV content to the dual 160GB drives. Otherwise, the system is loaded with features, including five USB ports, a fingerprint reader, a FireWire port, and both an ExpressCard/34 and a PC Card slot.

The HD burning process lags behind its Blu-ray competition, occurring at a slow IX speed. And if you let Toshiba’s Disc Creator software verify the finished product, the process will take twice as long, since the program analyzes each file.

The Intel dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM and discrete graphics card are set in stone on Toshiba’s Web site, but they are enough to handle most multimedia tasks and some 3D-intensive games (though not at a high resolution).

The Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV680 is not an economical way to score true 1080p content on your laptop. But if awesome surround sound and HD DVD burning capabilities are what you seek, this laptop delivers those goods and more.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini: Disaster Recovery to Go

Posted by newbie 0 comments

The market is filled with portable USB “pocket” drives with capacities up to 250GB. The Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini, a 160GB drive, stands out as one of the few that provide disaster recovery as well as data backup.

The OneTouch 4 Mini uses Maxtor’s OneTouch data backup program and its SafetyDrill utility, which copies an image of your C: drive onto the Mini. In case of computer catastrophe you can use the recovery boot CD to restore your PC (even if you need to replace your C: drive) - provided that your PC uses an NTFS- formatted drive. (Sorry, Mac users, you’re out of luck on this.) The Mini also has a 256-bit encryption utility to safeguard your data should the drive be lost or stolen.

The 5,400-rpm Mini is fast, taking 51seconds to back up my test folder using the One Touch utility and 49 seconds with Windows drag-and-drop. (Anything under a minute is quick.)

The list price of the OneTouch 4 Mini is lower on a GB- per-dollar basis that that of competing products from Toshiba and Western Digital. By adding in disaster recovery features and an ample five-year warranty, Maxtor has made the Mini an ideal travel companion.

HP w2408: A Brilliant Widescreen Display

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Although the HP w2408 has a vastly different design from last year’s HP LP2465, both share an impressive image quality and feature set. The w2408 is a 24-inch widescreen monitor with a brilliant screen that allows for flexible viewing options. Its panel boasts a 1,920-by-1,200 resolution and a very wide (92 percent) NTSC color gamut (the range of colors a monitor can show) for a consumer display. This makes for much bolder and sharper colors, and a brighter image, than are found in the model it replaces.

The w2408 has an HDCP-enabled DVI port, an analog input, five USB ports, and an audio jack for the rear-mounted speakers. But I’m puzzled by the lack of extra A/V inputs such as S-Video and component video. HP bills this as a model for entertainment as well as home office use, so those ports would make sense.

On my tests, primary and secondary colors appeared uniform and ramped evenly from dark to light, and there be no color tracking errors or signs of tinting. The panel’s 5-ms pixel response (black to white) delivered a bright, smooth widescreen video and gaming experience. The action was fast and furious (and smooth) when I played a round of F.E.A.R., while my favorite DVD movie, The Departed, looked spectacular, with no evidence of motion artifacts or ghosting. The w2408 doesn’t do quite as well at showing grays, with some blurring at the brightest and darkest shades.

Despite its shortcomings, the w2408 is a good choice if you’re looking for a big, bright display for work or play.

Netgear ReadyNAS NV+: The Top Small-Office NAS

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Beyond the usual features, this stylish NAS box adds some innovations and can manage both office and home duties. The combination of that with smoking performance (up to 30 MBps!) for general data transfers and media streaming earns the ReadyNAS NV+ our Editors’ Choice award for best small-business NAS device.

The ReadyNAS NV+ can certainly play in a home environment, too, but it’s specifically equipped with business muscle. For one, it’s consists of a four-disk enclosure that supports hot swapping- a must for businesses. Netgear’s patented X-RAID technology lets you upgrade not only without rebuilding the entire array, but with different hard-drive types -a bottom-line watcher’s boon.

You’ll find business smarts at the software level, too, where the ReadyNAS does everything from being a good network citizen to integrating its user list with Active Directory. It also supports multiple backup methods, Internet access to shared files, file and folder encryption, and more. Home users aren’t left out, with a media server and specific optimizations for iTunes and the SlimBox media server, as well other media products (via UPnP).

The ReadyNASNV+ is definitely not a lightweight. It’s priced on the high side, but it’s literally stuffed with features and blessed with lightning-fast throughput. For the more advanced home user, it’s a good machine. For a small business, it’s great.

Samsung SCH-i760 Review: Maximize Your Mobile Productivity

Posted by newbie Thursday, November 29, 2007 0 comments
Samsung SCH-i760
Verizon’s best Windows Mobile phone to date has the hottest form factor going right now: the dual keypad, with both a traditional number pad and a full QWERTY keyboard for typing messages. The Samsung SCH-i760 also packs plenty of power and offers rock-solid call quality.

Slid closed, the i760 looks like a thick candy bar-style phone. Opening the device rotates the screen and exposes the QWERTY keyboard. The 400-MHz processor lets Windows Mobile shine. Long e-mails open relatively quickly, and the included Picsel browser renders the most complex PDF files with aplomb. The only hitch was the 54MB of program memory, which, since Windows Mobile never quits programs, periodically ran out. AWOL are IM and GPS applications and support for 4GB memory cards; their absence is disappointing, but not a deal breaker.

The i760 connects to the Internet using both Verizon’s fast EV-DO Rev 0 network and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g. Calls made with Verizon coverage were loud and clear, with full-sounding voice tones, better-than-average noise cancellation, and a very powerful, clear speakerphone. The i760 can make calls and play music over both 2.5mm and wired Bluetooth headsets.

All of these features come together for a pleasant Windows Mobile experience, making the i760 the best Verizon mobile productivity tool I’ve seen.

Gateway XHD3000: The Videophile’s Grand Display

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Until recently 30-inch display, while offering high native resolution and excellent image quality, fell short in terms of video processing (the ability to scale videos at other resolutions to fit). All that has changed with the XHD3000, Gateway’s newest 30- inch display.

Although most PC displays have a video processor built in, before the XHD3000, none were able to scale content properly to 2,560-by-1,600 for 30 inch displays. Instead, this function was handled by the PC’s graphics card. The XHD3000 incorporates the Silicon Optix Realta chipset, a high-end video processor, making it capable of scaling, deinterlacing, and reducing noise on both standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) video streams.

The XHD3000 has inputs galore. You can connect up to six devices if you use S-Video and composite connections. You can also hook up a PC, a game console, and an HD disc player and switch easily between them with the included remote control.
One of the XHD3000’s best features is the way it handles picture-in-picture (PiP): You can scale PiP to a variety of resolutions and make it partially transparent. PiP enables you to have a video playing on your desktop yet still have access to all your PC’s desktop functions.

The XHD3000 did an excellent job of displaying games at varying resolutions without graininess. Motion performance was very good, though with a bit of smearing under very high-speed action.

One shortcoming is that the XHD3000’s panel doesn’t show as wide a range of colors as its competition. Gateway used a 72 percent color-gamut panel as opposed to the 92 percent panels that Dell and HP are using. That’s fine for consumer-level photo and video editing, but not for professional graphics work. Another flaw is that its backlighting isn’t uniform, and some backlight bleeding was visible in a darkened room.

Gateway’s 30-inch widescreen flat-panel LCD is pricey, going for a couple hundred dollars more than its competition. But if you want to hook multiple devices up to a big, high-resolution display that you plan to use more for HD video and gaming than for editing still images, this 30-inch display can’t be beat.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61: Lenovo Raises the Tablet PC Bar

Posted by newbie 0 comments

These days convertible tablet PCs are becoming more than just a niche of the mobile PC market, and Lenovo has been leading the way. With the best keyboard in the industry, very good performance scores, and a sturdy design, the ThinkPad X61 Tablet earns itself an Editors’ Choice nod.

Lenovo stuck with the same tried-and-true design elements for the X61. The magnesium-alloy-backed frame, which protects the system against wear and tear, and its pitch-black ID are identical to those of the rest of the ThinkPad line. Unlike many of its competitors, the tablet comes with a standard-size screen and only one option for resolution, 1.024-by-768. The matte screen finish is more advantageous for office work (as opposed to multimedia), but the screen allows for less vertical scrolling in tablet mode.

With its unmatched full-size keyboard and unique TrackPoint pointing- stick technology, the X61 provides the best typing experience I’ve found on a tablet-hands down. Tablet mode is where the system comes more in line with its competition. Writing recognition is superb and can be further improved by Vista’s Tablet PC Pen Training application. And the included digitizer pen has a rubber grip in the middle, increasing the comfort level.

The X61’s 66-Wh extended battery boosts the unit’s weight to 4,4 pounds. The system is stocked with features, including three USB ports and one FireWire port. The only thing missing is a built-in optical drive, omitted in order to keep the X61 as light as possible. (Those who can’t live without one can opt to purchase an additional 2-pound docking station with a built-in optical drive.) In the end, every convertible tablet is a compromise: Either you want the lightest system possible, or you opt for a heavier system with the ability to watch DVDs and install software.

The X61 also adds mobile broadband. You can choose between Cingular’s HSDPA and Verizon’s EV-DO services, indicated by the antenna bump on top of the screen.

Another concession to keeping the weight down is a low-voltage dual-core Intel processor. Even with 2GB of RAM on board, ULV processors have a tough time keeping up with Windows Vista, which will take up more precious space over time, ultimately slowing down your system. Still, the L7500 processor is a good choice if you want a good balance between performance and battery life. The processor’s low power consumption allowed the X61 to rack up 5 hours 17 minutes on the MobileMark 2007 test. That’s 32 minutes better than the performance of the HP Compaq 2710p, its closest competitor in this area.

Despite a slew of impressive convertible tablet entries, the X61 is standing up to the competition and making the changeover easy for many would-be tablet converts. Lenovo’s time-honored design is still winning formula.

Creative Zen: More Flash for Less Cash

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Creative has abandoned hard drive-based devices, and the new ZEN is the company’s first shot at a flash-based music and video player. It has larger screen and more features (including an FM radio and a voice recorder) than its comparably priced competitor, the iPod nano. The Zen also offers a roomy 16GB version, which rings up at $150 less than the same-capacity iPod touch. In addition, the ZEN has an SD memory card slot, so the player’s capacity is expandable.

Audio file support for the ZEN is fairly good, including WMA, MP3, and unprotected AAC. For video, the ZEN supports only WMV, but it comes with software to convert DivX/Xvid and MPEG-4 files. JPEGs are the only supported photo format.

The large 2.5-inch.320-by-240-pixel screen displays colorful and sharp images, and the interface uses graphics that are sharp, well designed, and easy to navigate. Audio quality is adequate, but you’ll want to upgrade the not-so-great bundled earphones.

Sure, the ZEN has its flaws: It’s nearly as big as some hard drive-based players: it doesn’t have a lightning-fast start-up time; and the interface can be a bit slow. But it works well, is expandable, and has more extras than you find in Apple players.

Pavilion this dv9000 also looks like piano in slippery material and flash applied. This material makes it seen elegan, though latter we discover s(he very susceptible of fingerprint. Though has tried cleanness hand, footstep jemari we remain to be ex- swimmingly. Possibly that is why HP brings as of mop sheet as equipment of standard.

HP Pavilion dv9000 can be classified as multimedia notebook; and it’s the special one. You can look in its speaker which using Altec Lansing, so that bang sound heard more energetic. Sound level is sett through unique touch button and gives futuristik impression. Its LCD screen is luxurious. Equiped with BrightView technology, we see a real bright screen to present every detail.

Other feature which strengthens dv9000 position as notebook multimedia is the existence of HDMI feature. With this feature you can connect this notebook to High Definition television that is supporting HDMI. It doesn’t forget provided a remote controller so you can operate this notebook from sofa in your family room.

Unfortunately there is dv9000 optical which still having DVD Writer type. When Dolby headphones or Dolby Pro Logic II function is activated, output voices felt more superb. Commentator voice also still be heard so clear even is surrounded by other sounds.

Noisy sound from DVD film is presented with wonderful in this headphone especially if activating Dolby Pro II function. Dialogues are heard clean and explosion sound makes my heart to tick. For music, we feel a little different. HQ-2300D likely is more suited for hard music compared to soft music.

Compaq Presario V3502TU Review: Great Performance with Class Design

Posted by newbie Friday, November 23, 2007 0 comments
Compaq Presario V3502TU
Along promotion of the new logo, HP starts clearly positions its Compaq series notebook. If HP Pavilion series positioned as upper class notebook, hence Compaq Presario series is more positioned as notebook for segment below its.

Compaq Presario V3502 which we tested is the first notebook in new era of Compaq. This Notebook has applied Intel Centrino platform Santa Rosa generation. Operating System of this notebook has applied Windows Vista, even only Home Basic version.

We call it “only” because Vista Home Basic is the lowest version from Vista. Main feature of Vista of course still be available, but Aero cannot appear in Vista Home Basic version. Though the 3D Flip display or transparent windows becoming the Aero characteristic is one of the very interesting feature a least from visual side. This notebook already applied best component but not too maximum because the limitation of Operating System.

If you like to sees true performance of this notebook, applies it for serious activity like doing multitasking or multimedia encoding. As seen from the test, this notebook has equivalent speed with notebook on other Santa Rosa bases. Though the processor applied is Intel T7100 (1,8GHz) which is lowest speed processor from the line of Santa Rosa processor.

This 2, 4 kgs notebook design is alike like Compaq Presario V3125TU series which we tested before. The main material is technology InPrint plastic, what marked with gleam surface with unique line pattern. Usage of the material of course is at risk to dirty whne hit by fingerprint, but we like its luxuriant impression which looks from its gleam surface.

While from usage side, we like its curved keyboard button so every button felt distance one another. But this notebook has the same issue like notebook which using plastical material, which is felt hot in left side of hand arm. While its screen can present bright picture but its viewing angle in vertical side rather limited.

Creative Zen Vision: M: iPod Video Great Competitor

Posted by newbie 0 comments

Looks like iPod? The difference is laying on the front display. iPod touch pad is in circle (in consequence is called as click wheel), while Creative makes it is vertical (and more wide) which felt more comfortable. To explore the menu just use you forefinger from the top downwards, and taps out to choose one of them.

Left and right side of each touch pad functioned as Next/Fast Forward and Anevious/Rewind button. This touch still is flanked by four other controller buttons (Shortcut - can be program by youself, Options, Play/Pause, and Menu/Back) which must be pressed litle strong.

Half up body of Creative Zen Vision: M predominated by 2,5 inch LCD screen. This screen really felt nice in eye. Pictures, including video display are come up sharply and full in screen. For video, Zen Vision: M is not troubles. Many popular formats, for example DiVX and XvID, which able to be recognized it.

Also pleases, the picture can be your background picture (wallpaper). Its method is easy: select your best picture, press Option button, and select Set as Wallpaper. More, you can also set the screen brightness level. Besides walpaper which able to be change by us, Creative provides six colour themes as wallpaper.

The pictures and song it’s also able to made as rating and playlist. To see the picture its available the Thumbnail, List, Detail, and Zoom modus. Picture may be looked while you listening song.

There is one which really special here, namely keyword! Yes, Zen Vision: M figures in the keyword feature (keyword). When I type word “Closer” in its virtual keyboard, and came out the “One Step Closer” from Linkin Park collection on MP3 file which we have in Zen Vision: M.

Besides music/video feature, picture, function of FM radio, voice recorder, and organizer also carriedby Zen Vision: M. and so do the harddisk function, although rather disturbs because we must activate it first, then determines capacities wanted (512MB - 16GB).

Creative Zen Vision: M is really a personal media player bases on harddisk that pleasing eye and ear. No wonder if this player gets “Best of Show and Best Portable Audio & Video” at CES 2006. One factor is less we like is way of battery charged which must pass USB connection and sync adapter. Creative Zen Vision: M is available in Black, white, green, pink, and blue color.

This high resolution sensor also accompanied by quality lens. With 35 until 210mm (equivalent 35mm) focus length means G9 user is given choice to arrange object composition until 6X magnification. In this lens Canon also plants two sides’ asperis optic which functioning to eliminate distortion effect at lens.
