Sony Picture Station DPP-FP90: Snapshot Printer Deluxe

Although Sony’s small-format photo printers have excelled at speed and quality, they've had shortfalls such as high cost per print or limited acceptance of memory card formats. With the Picture Station DPP-FP90, however, Sony seems to have gotten it right. It builds on the best in previous models while adding features such as a big (3.6-inch) color LCD and the ability to read numerous memory card formats.

The DPP-FP90 is compact. Measuring 2.3 by 6.9 by 5.3 inches (HWD), it weighs 2.2 pounds and has a handle for carrying. Unfortunately, it lacks even an optional battery.

The DPP-FP90 took 5O seconds per 4-by-6 print when printing from a computer, effectively tying the fastest dedicated photo printer I've tested. It prints even faster from CompactFlash cards. Output should at least match whit you'd expect from a photo Mask. With the LCD, you get some kiosk-style editing features. The menu offers filters for monochrome, sepia, and the like.

If you buy the most economical package of paper plus a dye roll, at $35 for 120 photos, the cost per print is 29 cents, in line with that of other dedicated photo printers. When you consider it’s per- print cost, speed, output quality, and its feature set, the DPP-FPOO is near picture-perfect.
